Episode 11: Sat Hari’s Story & Health Advice

Bedtime Forgiveness Process

Forgiveness is a powerful and profound process. My teacher, John-Roger, called it the key to the kingdom. What often gets in the way of my living the life I want, living more fully, living a life of greater loving, is my hurts and judgements. In the process of opening my heart, forgiveness has been and continues to be one of the key practices to letting go and healing my hurts and disturbances.
Recently, I have added into my nightly bedtime routine a forgiveness process. I have done this in years past, and once again find that I am in need of this process to complete my day.
It’s very simple, and I’ll break down the steps below. It is important to realize that we are forgiving ourselves for our judgements (those areas we have the hurt, the pain, the negative energy or negative ‘charge’). This is an inner process and one that is chiefly concerned with letting go of the negativity you are holding onto inside of you.
Here is a great excerpt from J-R’s book Forgiveness: The Key To The Kingdom, which is a great description of the process of forgiveness:
“Open your heart to Spirit and to all the hurt that you’ve experienced, and just say inside yourself, “I forgive myself for the mismanagements, misjudgments, misinformations, or whatever else has been happening that has made me feel hurtful, resentful, contracted, pulled away. I’m going to keep extending the loving again. And I’m going to keep expanding that, until one day it stays extended all by itself.” At that point, you’re really going to be
happy that you loved through the hurts and the discouragements and the despair and th crises, because you’ll find out that it’s really worth it.”
Here are the steps for my Bedtime Forgiveness Process
  1. Open your heart to Spirit asking only that which is for your highest good take place (sometimes thinking of your pet or child, a beautiful sunset, a spiritual teacher, Jesus, Buddha etc and touching your heart can help you move into that loving, open consciousness)
  2. Start saying forgiveness statements with whatever comes up as disturbances, hurts, incompletions, judgements and misunderstandings of the day (or from any other time). An example of how I do the forgiveness statement is “I forgive myself for judging_________” where you fill in the blank with how you’ve judged yourself, the other person or situation. You may find yourself sigh or take a deep breath as the imbalance releases.
  3. See your loving and the loving of the Spirit going to the person or situation you judged including yourself. If you notice you were holding the disturbance or judgement in a location in your body, you may place your hand there, seeing the loving going into that area where you were holding the disturbance.
  4. Repeat the process until complete

I recorded this episode while camping near Santa Cruz with my dog, so it has a little different feel.

Lately I’ve been speaking with people about God. Some are atheists and claim to not believe in God, others are religious and claim to believe in God. I find so much of the discussion revolves around belief or disbelief, yet there is no agreed upon definition of God. So, I discuss my view on letting go of beliefs and redefining God in a way that is more supportive to opening to the experience of That Which Is. Doing Away with Time Management

I spent a lot of my time trying to manage time. I read books about managing time. I had private sessions on managing time.

The only problem: I still didn’t feel like I had enough time

If the framework you are functioning in doesn’t work for you, that is, it doesn’t allow you to succeed, then change the framework! So I’ve thrown out working in the managing time framework. What I replaced it with works much better.

Managing time is like managing waves in the ocean. The waves just keep coming no matter how much you try to manage them, and time keeps going. When I was younger, I used to get overwhelmed a lot. I would feel the pressures of deadlines, and getting everything done that needed to be done. When I would discuss it with my spiritual teacher and boss, John-Roger (J-R), he would tell me, “Just do what’s in front of you to do.” It was simple, yet true. I would do that, but because I was still relating to the idea of time, eventually I would get overwhelmed again. As I got older, still trying to manage time, I found that the thing I seemed to lack most was time. The time to do all that I wanted to do.

Recently, I had a realization that rather than manage time, I will manage my energy. As my friend and teacher, J-R, got into the latter years of his life, I noticed that he was much more ruthless with what he got involved in and where he put his energy. His body no longer had the luxury of youth, and so out of necessity he cut away involvement in engagements, decisions and even conversations that weren’t the most important use of his energy. In a way, what I have done is to apply the lesson in my observation.

Now, instead of thinking in the concept of time, I think in the concept of energy. Where does my energy go? It goes where I focus. So, now I choose what I will focus on. In terms of how that works in my everyday life, each day I look at all that I can do, all that’s on my to do list, and decide what on my list (or something not on my list) is the most important place for me to put my focus and thus my energy. In terms of my business, that would be to look at what is the most important thing for me to put my energy into in alignment with the goals of my business. When I decide what that is, I focus on those things until completion.

Since I am managing my energy rather than time, I find that small distractions can take more energy than they are worth, and so I keep my focus on what I’m doing. I batch the little administrative items to a time in my schedule, and put my energy into them and focus on them until completion when that is important.

Obviously, I still schedule things, and have a to do list. But my schedule is no longer about managing time, but selecting a time for meetings and a time for important things for me to put my energy into. My energy management is the focus, and scheduling my time is a tool.

What’s amazing now, is that, as long as I don’t move back into the “managing time” framework, I seem to have plenty of time to do everything that is important. Time now takes care of itself. It seems to manage itself just fine, just like the ocean manages the waves. Time manages itself far better than I ever could.

I also find that I am living in the present much more. I can only use my energy to do things in the moment. The only place we can actually do, the only time in which we can take action is in the present moment. In this moment I can choose what to focus on, and there my energy will go. I can think and feel about the past and future, but I can only think, feel and do in the present.

So, if like me, you haven’t been able to manage time or always feel like you don’t have enough of it, try instead to manage your energy by choosing where you place your focus.

Episode 5: Lincolns Leadership & Getting Rid of Time Management

In this episode I talk about my struggles with time management, feeling like I never had enough time and how I was able to get rid of time management for a better framework.

 

The main part is a look at Lincoln’s leadership example and what we can learn from it, discussing one of my favorite books about the Lincoln, Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, as well as an excerpt from John-Roger, on leadership (from the seminar Are You Surrendering Your Leadership avail. at MSIA.org)
